For the month of February MQBMBQ is celebrating the dynamic quest(ion) of Black Queer love.
In partnership with Polaroid, we are creating a mini campaign that explores the nuances of love and the unlimited powers that it can unlock within Black Queer people. Whether in regards to romantic love, love of self, love for/from family or love of seeing and being seeing. Black Queer Love is something that we so rarely see represented in mainstream media but is a direct defiance to the Eurocentric standards of what is considered beautiful , worthy and/or acceptable.
With this project we would like to forge an alternate narrative that reflects on the impact love in all its forms has had on us individually and as a community. The instagram campaign opened with a list of six creatives who were selected by MQBMBQ & Polaroid to be ambassadors for the campaign as they created collages that depicted their Musings on Love, after which an open call was launched for Black Queer creatives everywhere to join in. In closing , four of the participants were selected and given grants as a token for their creativity.
“Love takes off the masks that we fear cannot live without and know we cannot live within. in. I use the word “love” here not merely in the personal sense but as a state of being, or a state of grace — not in the infantile sense being of made happy but in the tough and universal sense of quest and daring and growth” - James Baldwin
